The Goldenen Sternen was first mentioned in a document dated 1349. Another document from 1412 gives the first piece of
evidence that the guesthouse zem swartzen Sternen (to the Black Star) offered food and drinks for travellers. At that time the Sternen
was one of 13 inns, which were granted the Tavernenrecht, which could be translated into the right of tavern. Due to this privilege the
Sternen was allowed to offer three kinds of wine and a meal.
Until 1873 the inn was known as swartzen Sternen. But as the house was then redecorated in new, more cheerful colours, its name changed into
Zum Goldenen Sternen - To the Golden Star.
In 1964, the city authorities decided to widen the road in Aeschenvorstadt where the Sternen was located. Fortunatly they realized the historical
value of the ancient Sternen. When they started to demolish the building, they discovered magnificent paintings on the walls and ceilings.
To save the historical substance, the plan was born to transfer the Goldenen Sternen from Aeschenvorstadt to Dalbeloch. So the historical building of
the Sternen was dismantled stone by stone board by board and ceiling by ceiling and rebuilt again with lots of effort under the stern supervision of
the Swiss office of monuments in the years 1973 to 1974.
Since then, our restaurant has been located in this picturesque part of Basel, directly on the bank of the river Rhine, quickly and easily to reach
by foot, by tramway and car and with the ferry Wilde Maa.
